Episode 47: Collision in Space Airing Date 2000-05-09 We've been waiting for it, they've been promising it and now it's finally here. The official beginning of the end. The battle to end all battles. Earth versus the Space Colonies. Well, really Earth versus the White Fang, but you know what I mean. The first punch was thrown by the Libra when White Fang pointed its massive laser cannon and decimated the North Pole. Now Treize Khushrenada and a seemingly endless supply of Mobile Suits attack the Libra. At first the Gundam boys watch from the sidelines but it eventually becomes clear that while they don't necessarily want to fight for Earth, they must bring down Libra -- it's just too darn dangerous. It's kind of cool to see all the varying threads come together to create the fabric of this colossal outer space battle. What's weird, however, is that like the previous Gundam Wing episodes where people like to talk to themselves, this time it seems that everyone else can hear them. At one point Miss High and Mighty Dorothy Catalonia says something on the bridge of the Libra and then Treize (in his Tallgeese MS) agrees with her. Huh? Is everyone on the same frequency here? "Listen up, people. Good guys on channel one, bad guys switch over to channel two." In what would have been a thrilling sequence if the series was shot in live action (which would have probably made this series the most expensive ever!), the Libra heads for Earth in order to blow the blue marble into smithereens. Knowing that they can't outshoot the giant space fortress, the Peacemillion fires all thrusters and heads directly for the laser cannon. The Libra is too bulky to dodge the smaller ship and the Peacemillion crashes right into the Libra. Amazingly, neither ship is destroyed but the good guys managed to end the threat of the laser cannon taking another shot at Mother Earth. Yee-haw. Welcome to Earth -- evil aliens and humans born in space not allowed. In what's got to be considered a bit of a letdown, though, Heero spends major hang time with Relena while the battle rages on. These two crazy kids barely even speak! It's clear Relena wants Heero and we can only assume that he feels likewise since when they're not together he's always sighing her name. Yet when they get together with the drama of a war playing out right outside their window, nothing happens. Heero, my friend, that Zero System might've done something bad to you after all. While Heero and Relena are studying their shoelaces, Quatre, Duo and Trowa board the Libra and make their way toward the Mobile Doll control system. Their plan is to deactivate the White Fang forces, in effect bringing Zechs to his knees. It's a good plan but logic goes out the window when you're dealing with a crazy man. If truth be told, our boy Zechs is living just next door to psycho. In any event, this was a fast moving episode that certainly torqued up the action more than just a few notches. What happens next is anyone's guess. --Ross Brooks, who has renamed his car the Peacemillion cause he likes to ram things.
